The KidsOut event, which this year called on the help of
some 12,000 volunteers, took place simultaneously at more than 150 different locations throughout
England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Over 22,000 children were taken by Rotarians from
over 700 clubs, for fun-packed days at a massive variety of venues.
Some venues, like ours at Thorpe Park in Surrey, played host to as many as 1,500
children, others were on a smaller scale. The children, many of whom are suffering from physical disability and in wheel chairs, were transported by car, coach, minibus and ambulance.
Whatever the means of transport, the day always promises a carnival atmosphere, with many of the vehicles sporting decorations and Rotarians in fancy dress.
KidsOut has been providing days out for children with special needs since 1990. Organised by Rotary and generously supported by the
Littlewoods Organisation, Monarch Airlines, Granada Retail Catering, and Next plc, the day is also made possible with help from staff of other national and local companies, as well as the police, fire
service and local authorities.
The Haddenham & District Rotary Club arranged to take
children from the Stoke Leys School in Aylesbury, to Thorpe Park for the day. Stoke Leys School is a
specialist establishment catering for children with learning difficulties and the Club and School have built up a sound relationship, entertaining children to a day out each year, for several years now.
"This is a unique day of happy memories and experiences not only for these very special children but for all those involved in making it happen," said Mr Ron Westwood, Head Teacher at Stoke Leys.
